Soft Magnetic Composites

Our solutions

At Sintex, we develop and manufacture customized components in Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC).

We ensure that our products are competitive, with good magnetic properties such as high relative permeability and high magnetic saturation combined with high electrical resistance.

The SMC material consists of very pure iron powder with an electrically insulating surface coating on every particle. This  ensures a high electrical resistance in the material even after compaction and heat treatment and almost negates eddy current loss.

SMC is attractive in applications that require low losses, in particular at high frequencies because the benefits of SMC increase with the magnetic frequency. At frequencies that exceed approximately 200 Hz, SMC exhibits lower loss than the standard 0.5 mm thick laminated iron plates. This improves the maximum power rating, running costs and accommodates the environment.

Examples of SMC applications:

This means that components can often be designed with reduced size, weight, and cost to make integration with the surrounding system easier by reducing the number of geometric limitations. The complicated 3D geometries and alternative flux paths permit a high fill factor for copper windings.

The isotropic magnetic properties of SMCs provide new opportunities compared to traditional laminated sheet metal, which only has good properties in two directions (and only in one direction in the transformer sheet). SMCs are made of compressed powder, so it is possible to produce workpieces with complex geometries.

Soft Magnetic Composites

Advantages of SMC:

  • Unique 3D magnetic and electrical properties
  • Possibility for compact designs through the use of 3D geometries
  • Efficient manufacturing process for high volume production
  • Low total price and weight as a result of derived savings on other components and processes in the construction
  • Low iron loss at high frequency, which is why a switch to SMC in high frequency applications will save both money and help to protect the environment

Examples of benefits

Compared to many conventional solutions, the unique aspect of magnetic systems is that the magnetic field can pass through materials, liquids and gases. Non-contact transmission of magnetic signals, forces and effects means that it is possible to separate media such as liquids and gases. This avoids both the use of seals and prevents wear on the systems. Maintenance is not necessary, which increases the service life of the systems. If, for example, a magnetic system is compared to traditional electromagnets, there are numerous design options that enable not only simpler solutions to be produced, but also more compact solutions to be found. No energy is used to maintain the magnetic field and cooling is not necessary, thus the solution as a whole is usually more environmentally friendly.

The benefits with regards to your particular product can of course be related to something quite different. Sintex’ experts are always at your disposal to provide their expertise to enhance your solutions. Please contact our sales department for more information.
